Day Trips from Los AngelesLong Beach - The Queen MaryThe one time luxury liner, now a hotel/museum/attraction. There are tours, special exhibitions, restaurants, and bars to enjoy. No car? No problem! You can reach the Queen Mary by taking the Metro Red Line from Hollywood to the 7th Street station, where you transfer to the Blue Line, which will take you all the way to the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Also in Long Beach: The Aquarium of the Pacific; Port of Long Beach; Cal State University Long Beach. Downtown L.A. Spend a day Downtown, just short trip away via the Metro Red Line. There's plenty going on at the LA Live Center, which includes the Nokia Theatre, several restaurants, and Staples Center, home of the Lakers, Clippers and Kings. Just up the street, you can check out the Central Library branch of the Los Angeles Public Library system. Union Station, where the Red Line ends, is worth a trip in itself, and just a short walk from Olvera Street, where the city got started, and Chinatown. In the summer, enjoy a Dodger Game at nearby Dodger Stadium. San Diego Zoo The world famous zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park are a great destination for the entire family. If you prefer sea animals, there is always Sea World. Also near San Diego: Legoland California Resort; Del Mar racetrack and fairgrounds; Balboa Park. A Day at the Races Nothing can match a day at the track for fun and excitement. There is racing year-round at one of the local tracks. Santa Anita Park in Arcadia is the crown jewel of the Southern California racing circuit. Just east of Pasadena, with the unique, majestic backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains, many consider this to be the most beautiful track in the world. The winter meeting runs from December 26 to mid April. Hollywood Park, a short trip south to Inglewood, has race meets in spring and fall. Del Mar "Where the turf meets the surf" has a seven week summer meeting. Take the Amtrak train for a great day trip! For free racing picks and tips go to Horse Race Ace. Santa Monica Head straight down Sunset Blvd. to where it meets the sea, and spend some time in Santa Monica. The venerable Santa Monica Pier is a great way to enjoy the Pacific Ocean. The Third Street Promenade is an outdoor mall, featuring numerous shops and restaurants. Catalina Island Travel by Sea or Air to Southern California's island getaway spot. |
